Corkscrew Takeoff

Flying observation. I have always known that a pilot has some ability to make up for lost time, especially when behind schedule. Of course it takes a bit more fuel so they rarely do that. But I am guessing when there is a major weather event in the making all bets are off. So here I am in an MD88, I have flown them many times.

Normally we take off and gradually ascend to cruising altitude where the air is thinner and the aircraft is more efficient. At ten thousand feet in the ascent a bell always dings. I pay attention for that because that is when WiFi is turned on in the plane.

So, today we took off from Hartford to the north/northeast, I believe. Once off the ground we immediately bank to the left and shoot upward like I rarely feel on flights. I felt like a corkscrew as we wound around to the south, it looked like we were close to vertical (I know we were not but I was looking up from my straightforward seat). I then heard that 10k ft bell ding faster than I think I have ever heard it. I guess the pilot wants to beat the weather, too!
